Hawthorne, A Wonder-Book for Boys and Girls (pp. Mother Ceres’ return brings a whole lot of bloom because of her joyful reunion with Proserpina, while she left behind a world of cold because she was grief-stricken over Proserpina. Proserpina would spend six months of the year with her mother and the other six with King Pluto. The day came when she sees her mother and admits to eating six pomegranate seeds. She asks of her whereabouts meanwhile, Proserpina refuses to eat any food till she sees her mother. Mother Ceres comes home to find Proserpina missing, and the search for her begins. Amidst the screams, her mother couldn’t hear, he kidnaps her from the world of light to the world of darkness where he lives in a magical but unpleasant opulence of King Pluto’s dominions. King Pluto looks handsome but dangerous, and Proserpina takes notice of it. She struggles to pull it from the ground, and when she finally does, it opens up a vast hole from which King Pluto emerges with his four steeds pulling his chariot. As she goes farther into the fields to pick the best of flowers, she comes across an enchanted shrub tree. Proserpina has friends, the sea nymphs whom she picks flowers for to make necklaces. Mother and daughter are separated when King Pluto kidnaps Proserpina while her mother is far from home growing corn (Hawthorne, 2011). The story is about Mother Ceres, her daughter Proserpina, and King Pluto, the underworld’s dark figure.
